10/31/09 ROUTED BY RUSTIN
WEST GOSHEN — Quickly jumping on top of your opponents is something that every team strives for. Where West Chester Rustin is concerned, however, its becoming a weekly occurrence.
Rustin scored on its first three possessions en route to a dominating 44-0 victory over Great Valley on Friday at West Chester East's Harold I. Zimmerman Stadium.
The win kept the Golden Knights perfect at 9-0 on the season, but more importantly, their 4-0 mark in the Ches-Mont League American Division gave them a share of their second straight division crown. They can win the crown outright next Friday against Oxford.
"It's exciting to be playing for the league championship next week," said Rustin coach Mike St. Clair. "It's our primary goal every season."
Great Valley's fortunes took an immediate downward turn on its first possession. Forced to punt, Brian Pommerer's effort was blocked to set up Rustin at the Great Valley 19. Two plays later, Rondell White scampered in from 11 yards out to give Rustin a quick 7-0 lead.
Special teams played a part all evening as the Rustin kickoff team kept the Patriots pinned near their end for most of the game.
"Their special teams were excellent," said Great Valley coach Gary Phillips. "Their kicker (Will Mau) did a great job squibbing kicks. We had trouble picking them up and we were kept deep in our end."
For St. Clair, the credit goes to another member of his coaching staff.
"Coach George Veneziale does a great job with the special teams all week in practice," he said. "They practice hard and tonight, they came out and did a great job."
Following a Mau field goal, Rustin's special player forced the spotlight to be shone on the special teams.
Rondell White lined up in punt formation, but when he saw the way was clear, he took off. A couple of blocks and a few jukes later, White completed a spectacular 78-yard run to give Rustin a 17-0 lead with 3:30 left.
"We ran this a few times last year," said White. "The defense thought I kicked it away and I got a couple of blocks and went all the way."
Meanwhile, the defense was shutting down Great Valley's all-purpose threat, Brian Pommerer, holding him to 32 yards on the ground on 13 carries. The Patriots (2-2, 3-6) were held to just two first downs on the night as Rustin posted its second shutout in the last three games and its fourth this season.
White would add a touchdown later, along with his brother, Rahmier, and Andrew McGreevy scored on the ground and through the air.
